Because Jamil and Azul wanted Nami to know both of their own languages, after she had started speaking they adopted the “one parent, one language” model for bilingual children (and eventually adding ‘English/standard common language in twst which for me would be English’ at school and other places)

This did however lead to an era where Nami had absolutely NO CLUE that her parents could actually speak to each other. She’d grown up hearing abt the mermaid princess SHE got a husband without saying a word it made perfect logical sense that her parents were together despite being unable to speak to each other as well.

So for the longest of time, whenever one would give her a little test (like Jamil asking her to bring Azul a folder he left in the living room to his office) she took it with GREAT importance, because SHE was their only lifeline!! Only She could foster the communication between them, so she had to make sure it was perfect!!!

Genuinely she believed 100% her dads had never spoken a word to each other. There was one time specifically where Jamil was leaving to go hang out with ruggie, and she ran off to go say goodbye at the door. Azul absentmindedly just went “tell your baba I love him!” As she scurried off and her little brain just exploded.

Bc that was also the first time she had ever been told that! To her this was the first time Azul had EVER said I love you to Jamil. She fucking RAN to Jamil and just jumped while going “papa said he loves you!!!1!1!1!!1” bc to her this was like. The BIGGEST moment ever.

(Of course Jamil was not entirely aware of her thought process at that moment, and simply kissed her on the forehead before saying “goodbye dear. Could you tell him I love him too?” Which lead to little Nami freaking out more and like. Basically jumping Azul on the couch. That is when Azul REALIZED that she thought they just spoke their one language-)

tell me your meronia thoughts dear mutual... anything you want

JDSJDJ HI… if you want to read any of my other meronia thoughts just go through my #meronia tag (or look at my pinned bcs it’s depraved). But here u go.

So, when I first got interested in meronia I was really sad because I couldn’t think of any plausible way mello would have feelings for near so it was doomed to be one sided. Now, I was mainly thinking about the canon universe cause even if mello lived I just felt like there was way too many years of building a false perception of near in his head and disregarding him as a figment of the past as mello built up his new life in the mafia that even if they had come together to defeat kira mello would still leave the moment the case ended, as he had already decided what near meant to him and wasn’t willing to change his mind or give him a chance out of pride and his need for independence.

Even if they did decide to work together after kira, I always assumed mello would keep his distance in some way (either physically or emotionally) and simply relegate near to his work partner who he eventually comes to tolerate, and begrudgingly understand. But I honestly didn’t see what part of near mello could feasibly be attracted to? Like obviously they have a unique intellectual connection, but also near is a snarky shut in with polite but surface level social skills and mello feels personally attacked by him and can’t figure out why near gets under his skin… there’s so many layers of conflict they would first need to work out, and mello not being open to the prospect of romance to begin with (given their complicated, well, everything) wouldve simply caused to never happen, because near for obvious reasons would never make a move. I felt like they would just fall into a semi-comfortable normalcy with each other and be satisfied with their mutually respectful relationship (despite near’s, yknow, confused longing or whatever), but mello would have a life outside of being kira while near wouldn’t really. I also don’t think canon mello particularly cares for romance and wouldn’t see himself as the type of person to settle down

So I started looking outside of the canon universe, and then I spiralled because mello and near, if you remove all their upbringing and baggage, are fundamentally from two completely different worlds and to collide them is difficult. But then my friend said this thing that blew my fucking mind: “I feel like mello is attracted to caricatures” and honestly? It made so much sense. I see mello as being pansexual (or maybe gay) and his yearning for challenge/itching for intensity would lead him to be interested in people who are very emblematic of tropes/stereotypes because they would make his life more exciting (think goths, punks, anime tropes like genki girls and tsunderes, basically people who mello would want to dissect for fun). So he would take one look at this absolute weirdo of a stereotypically smart anti social overgrown snobbish man child (saying this lovingly) that near is and go “he’s crazy. He’s so weird. I need him to notice me” and just continue bothering near until he gets his undivided attention and eventually get obsessed with him

uhhh okay im gonna TRY to come up with some additional thoughts since i am going to the trouble of making this post. i guess one question is— does mello RESPOND to the emails??? probably. he loves to be mad about stuff and he hates not being heard when he's mad about stuff. so like. initially he's just replying to the emails from matt with “i hate that stupid fucking furby” and “how much money do i have to give you to set it on fire, or at least stop emailing me” but when matt points out that mello could just auto sort the emails to spam mello pretends as if he doesn't see that one. eventually, as mello's responses become marginally less hostile, matt is like 😌 it's time to up the ante. and begins including his Fun Near Facts. these include but are not limited to:

- he took college level differential equations when he was 14! 🤓 (mello response: okay, so he's a loser??)

- he's not a loser he's REALLY cool (note: matt loves to lie. or he actually has an unrealistically kind view of near's swag levels) (mello does not dignify this with a reply)

- he loves talking about math! don't worry though it's really easy to tune it out and he doesn't really care if you're not listening (mello response: i don't know why i would need to know that.)

- one time he saved me from drowning 😳 (note: matt also loves to embellish. near “saved him from drowning” by telling matt to not try his luck at jumping over a river, which wasn't actually even deep enough for him to drown in)

uuhhhhh okay running out of matt's fun facts about near BUT. the point is that he is wingmanning so hard. i guess another question is whether or not near picks up on the fact that matt is regularly taking candid photos of him? my thought is no. i could see near being sort of a space cadet in this respect tbh; if he's absorbed enough in something he tunes everything else out)

hmm. genuinely running out of steam so lemme just jot down a few more ideas and then someday maybe i will add more when more comes to me.

- near: lives in... actually, fuck it, NOT new york. he and matt room together in minneapolis. near is in a PhD program for math— either complex analysis or topography. idk. something. matt is a programmer of some kind bc i am not creative.

- mello: i think i already said but he lives in LA, works for the mob. probably isn't really that Into It but he got in when he was pretty young and it's not like he has a lot of other options at this point? i imagine it isn't something he spends a lot of time angsting over but he's probably kinda unfulfilled.

OH okay sorry i got an idea. these stupid emails from matt go on for a few months, with mello gradually responding in very slightly less mean ways & occasionally asking questions,,, and then one day the Daily Near Email comes through and it's a picture of near somewhere in LA. probably griffith's observatory actually. and matt (knowing full well from mello's social media that he lives in Los Angeles) captions the image something like “where did you say you lived again??? 🤔”

okay now i'm REALLY out of ideas. not sure how the fact that mello has barely Actually spoken to near would be resolved!! thanks for listening to the Morgan Being Deranged podcast, tune in next time for another incredibly niche stupid idea 🥰

Death Note: Rockstar AU

So I came up with this idea after looking at Ryuk’s original design and just had to share it!

Basically in this AU, Light is an aspiring rockstar and he, Ryuk and Misa form a band, using the Death Note to secretly eliminate their competition. L, Mello and Near are all members of a rival band as well as being undercover detectives trying to figure out why so many celebrities keep dropping dead. A battle of wits and sick guitar riffs ensues, with plenty of enemies-to-lovers-to-enemies tension between Light and L.

I’m planning to turn this into a fanfic at some point but as of right now I only have one snippet currently completed, which is as follows:

“Light Yagami!” The voice of his father snapped Light back to reality. He and Ryuk turned sheepishly around to find Soichiro Yagami standing in the doorway, looking thoroughly irate. “What on earth are you doing?” He demanded. “Oof, busted!” Chuckled Ryuk.

“I’m just practicing for the talent show, dad,” Light replied, smiling as innocently as he could. “Are you practicing trying to deafen the neighbourhood and demolish the house, too?” Soichiro glared at his son. “There’s a gigantic crack in the living room ceiling!” Light cringed inwardly upon hearing this and Ryuk burst out laughing. “Sorry, I’ll try to keep it down,” Light chuckled awkwardly. “I hope so,” His father replied sternly, before leaving the room and muttering to himself: “Ugh, kids these days…”

Once he was sure his father was out of earshot, Light breathed a sigh of relief and said: “Ryuk, you better stop leaping up and down on my bed from now on. You’ve already dented the mattress!” Ryuk simply laughed again and gave a sarcastic “Oops!”

But yeah, that’s the idea so far. If anyone’s interested in helping me develop it (including deciding on a name for it) please let me know bc that would be phenomenal 😊

Relationships

She's aligned with Team L!! of course dnsjhd

Rie and L have a funny relationship because they've worked together for a while and seem close but aren't together (as far as the TF know at least. I'm not sure yet to what degree her relationship with L has progressed at the time the anime is set). but everyone who meets them goes: "a girl in love and a man who's apathetic"

She actually likes Light a lot, because he's a nice guy, when he's not Kira. would be friends with him in another life.

When it comes to 「Kira」 whoever they may be, she dislikes but understands them. She knows that there are problems in the world and a lot of them stem from "evil people", but she doesn't really believe in purely evil people, and also realises that Kira's methods are counterproductive.

Rie does NOT get along with Misa. she can tolerate her but only in small doses. She's always kind to her, though this is mostly so she can try to get information out of her.

As for the rest of the Task Force: Likes them all. She never met Ukita though cause she introduces herself a while after L does in my current plan. Thinks Matsuda is a little naïve and Chief Yagami is blinded by his love for his son.

At the moment I'm thinking Rie isn't an orphan but lived somewhere near Wammy's House when she was little. She loooves annoying Near, Matt and Mello.

Lore So Far

there's a lot of unrefined stuff, what I have here is likely to change

I mentioned beforehand she works with L for a few years before the Kira case. she actually spent a lot of her life tracking him down, basically just to play with him/annoy him because... she's just an ass like that. So eventually she was able to contact him and they played a Game of cat and mouse, detective vs detective (I have a minific written for this that I might share. also Rie's not quite a detective... kinda a vigilante? not sure how to explain)

my current plan is she ends up getting stuck in a situation like Light was, where L suspects her for a case (she hacked into his database and deleted all his files) and has to work with her and keep an eye on her. I'm considering that she purposely got caught bc she was in trouble with more dangerous people, but maybe L catches her because, well, he's the world's greatest detective and the dangerous people just encounter Rie later

she's eventually cleared of suspicion because she wasn't involved in the cases she wiped, she just deleted them to be annoying and win the Game. Rie sticks around to annoy L for a while but then in come the dangerous people!!

the reason for this isn't fully fleshed out yet, but she gets herself kidnapped and once they realise she worked with L they try to get information on him out of her (through torture pretty much). this bit is the bit I'm probably least happy with, I want to work on it more. but in the end her stomach gets cut open, she escapes and collapses/gets rescued, and L realises he can trust her.

Rie goes to various countries and does her own thing for a few years, occasionally assisting L on cases, before she comes to Japan for the Kira case

there's so much Kira related stuff that I think I'll make another post sometime haha.

but that is the simplified and unrefined version of her backstory!

Personality

a proud feminist!! because come on death note needs one. (I know I said earlier she likes Light and dislikes Misa but the way he treats her ticks Rie off)

honestly can be very annoying on purpose, like a sibling

that said she's a good person overall, has done suspicious contract work and whatever, but she loves people and she really cares for everyone in her life

energetic 50% of the time, asleep the other 50%.

Pretty analytical but definitely has and expresses emotions. Probably INTP but I'm not great with MBTI tying.

a sore loser. But instead of trying to win, she will just give up if she knows there's a chance of losing. that way she can tell herself that it was her decision and thus, she won.

Loves her friends + family and has a somewhat motherly vibe

Strengths

she's the smartest woman in the world!! because honestly it is a crime that all the smart people in death note are men and hey, it's kind of cool to make an oc who's the anything-est in the world. (I wouldn't say she's REALLY the smartest, she just has a fairly wide skill set and is intelligent. maybe the highest-achieving)

Well she hacked L's main databases so I think you can tell she's good with technology

Her major in uni was psychology! Criminal and maybe abnormal psych, that is. also has dabbled in sociology and neurology. Rie knows a lot of languages.

a good baker (this may be the real reason L didn't have her killed).

A cheerful presence, good at raising morale and making L seem more approachable and likeable to the Task Force. usually optimistic.

Weaknesses

I know I just said she's optimistic, but this is because she makes a conscious effort to be. Rie's got a lot of anxiety and worries, and struggles with several mental health issues.

Her pride is as bad as L's ego. Actually, she'd claim it's worse.

When she gets angry she gets ANGRY. will straight up punch someone in the face and yell for hours.

Rie has attachment and abandonment issues I think. also because of the whole torture thing she's got some pretty bad PTSD.

She can be really rude/blunt. claims this is unintentional.

Rie has a cat! her name is Synonym, nicknamed "Sin"

her favourite flowers are hydrangeas, bluebells, and roses (she's got a literal guns and roses aesthetic going on). Her favourite trees are wisterias and her favourite animals are either otters or elephants.

She's autistic (totally not because I'm autistic and can't write a neurotypical character)

Rie is actually just an alias. I'm debating on, if she lived near Wammy's, she might have met L and this would be a nickname derived from her middle name. but then I have to explain the "woah memory loss!!" in the whole database/suspicion incident. so, it's probably just a name that she likes. or maybe she shortened her own middle name.

The full alias is Rie Takamura. She also goes by Hina Suzuki (Japanese equivalent of Jane Doe) and 1429 (fourteen twenty-nine).

SHE LOVES CASINOS. her theme song would probably be "Joker and the Thief" (or maybe not, but it's in my playlist for her). Rie's very careful not to let herself get addicted to gambling but gosh she loves going to a casino, pretending to be a dumb girl, and counting cards until she can sweep the table off its legs.

Hi, Mello. There’s no surprise that Levi is a really popular character that receives a lot of love. But some people just love him because he’s badass and handsome, others bc of his personality and story…Why do you like him? Or what was the moment that you said:”yes, he’s my fav character.”

Hello thank you for the ask, anon!

I started loving Levi during the uprising arc. I did not see the appeal before lol but there wasn't much to go on. Levi, rude, badass, he don give a fuq, blah blah. I didn't hate him, but I was pretty neutral.

But during the uprising arc and the OVAs, we get to start seeing his nuances. There are plenty of other, better, more thought-out metas regarding Levi's character, and they no doubt helped me form my own opinions, so I'll keep this short.

The main thing that draws me to Levi is his internal disposition. He doesn't outwardly express hardly any emotion, yet he feels so deeply, and that is something I find very relatable.

And relatablility aside, Levi is one of the few characters that remain good throughout the story. Despite his upbringing and the plot of aot, Levi doesn't lose his compassion. The man takes L after L and has every reason to be a cold, uncaring, jaded prick, but he's just not. He comes off as such, but that's more of how he was raised. He has a big heart and despite all his trauma, he remains genuinely altruistic.

I like shipping him with Hange, because Hange is a very outwardly expressive person, pretty much Levi's opposite in that regard. Hange pulls him out of his shell, slowly but surely. I like to think that Levi lives vicariously through Hange's excitement. He can't being himself to gush over how cool trains are, but he loves to watch Hange do it 🤭

MELLO

When Mello first saw you he was intrigued. He knew what punk was obviously but actually seeing someone who was punk in person was a different story. The way you carried yourself with confidence and with your individuality oozing off of you, he was a bit smitten. So he asked you out. In the long route even if you said no- he was going to ask again anyways.

After dating for sometime you thought it would be good to reallt explain to him how you were and what it truly meant. What you were for. And you were for non-conformity. You were more politically active than most and constantly stated your disagreements with media and politics today, and even with Mello basically just staring at you- there was no embarrassment or shyness in your tone. You meant what you were saying.

Over time, Mello began to slowly absorb you and your views. ‘Anti-whatever sort of system we live in’ was what he chanted after you had gone on rants about what you believed was truly right in such a system, and it was so adorable because he truly thought that was impactful. So adorable in fact that everytime he said it you stopped everything to coddle him and embrace him. And every time, you were being fooled because he did it on purpose. 1 - Mello, 0 - You.

Now your music was not something that was hard for him to get into. He enjoys seeing you headbang or move in such ways to. Maybe you were playing classic Green Day, Circle Jerks, Misfits, whatever it was there was always something that stuck with him. He enjoyed the emotion involved- he could feel angry or frustrated or just motivated in general through the music.

Sometimes he saw you checking and would honestly be so zoned out watching you. Whether your hair was in locs. Shaved on the sides, or completely shaved off there was something about watching you and your focus on your appearance. He understood that being punk wasn’t just black clothes or objecting any modern rule, of course not. It was a way to reject the political as well as social norms of the world. And Mello loves attention and standing out so he actually started buying clothes like yours too!! He’s not completely punk but he likes trying for you.

L

L is a complicated soul he is. When he first saw you he was honestly confused. Why did you look like that- were you angry? Why were you so stone-faced. And to be honest, it was a little scary to him. Once you noticed him you walked over and for a second he thought you were going to scold him but instead you smiled and held out your hand. “Y/n.” You said, and he felt his heart beat a bit faster. Let’s not focus on that though.

You began dating quite fast as he felt no reason to wait. So when you began dating is when he began asking his questions about why you dress like that and why tou style your hair in that way, and you had given him the simple answer.

“I’m punk.”

“....what is that.”

And it’s not that he’s dumb but he’s not all that impressive when it comes to subcultures. I mean he’s a detective- he doesn’t have to be. But since his s/o is one he’ll take it upon himself to research and check his knowledge and make sure it is also the same case with you since he learned not all punk’s have some sort of consensus.

“So you are doing this to show that you go against the way things are now? Like a silent rebellion?”

“Sure yeah.”

It’s simple talks like those that happen all the time because he constantly wants to know more about you, despite being able to ask you himself, he likes surprising you with his knowledge. However he also knows that some things he has to get specifically from you since you’re black and most punk represented in the media is classically white people- he wants to understand your perspective out of all this. Nobody else’s.

When you start playing your music he kind of shuts down? He just stares at you because he’s not too sure if he likes the music or not but he soon warms up to it. He enjoys The Clash the most, he likes most of what yoy play though.

When you talk to him about politics and your beliefs he tries to listen and tie it to his understanding of being punk as well but sometimes he can’t tell if it’s something you believe or it’s a common punk belief, not that it matters, but still.

Overall this is a learning experience he doesn’t mind learning for you. It doesn’t even affect him in a negative way so he has no reason to be against it I mean, he can still kiss you and feed you cake after work so what is the problem?

MATSUDA

Matsuda is just chilling dawg. When he sees you he is a bit flustered, he can’t lie. But he doesn’t mind it, he almost embraces it. Your whole vibe attracted him from the beginning and that was surprising because he usually wouldn’t go for punk people (he hadn’t even seen many in general if at all)

He does get the courage to ask you out after staring at you for lord knows how long, and he’s almost embarrassed at how you just smile so sweetly at him. He totally misjudged your character. Even if it wasn’t on purpose he did subconsciously think you would have a more dominant personality, but that part only truly came out when talking about what you stood for as a punk black individual. Which you did quite often.

Listen- he doesn’t mean to but when you talk about that stuff all he can think about is how attractive you are. Your face, your outfits, your stature itself was so inviting. So he DOES just start kissing you and hugging you- what about it? Not like you mind, in fact you invite it everytime, but it is kind of weird how everytime it happens this is always how it ends.

When you start bringing up trying to introduce him to what it is that you are, it isn’t to convert him but he doesn’t seem to understand that. So be bites his lip and proceeds to say,

“Ah...sorry but um..I don’t think I am fit for that- not that it isn’t cool! You’re very cool and hot and I enjoy you a lot but...I don’t think it’s for me.” He stutters with a clear blush on his cheeks and you have to laugh.

“I just wanted to show you Suda I promise.” You say and he quickly relaxes his shoulders from their hunched up position.

Matsuda is not made for punk music and it’s almost funny. He tried it- he really did. He sat there and listened for an hour but he just couldn’t get into it the way you did, and it was something you expected but that didn’t mean it wasn’t any less cute to watch him try and pretend he enjoyed it with his awkward headbops.

When you talk about politics or the current state of the world and your views it’s very little that he shares his opinions because he cannot seem to want to. I mean there you are- pouring your heart and soul into this topic- especially highlighting how frustrating it is that there is barely any black-punk rep in te media, and he give you a two sentence “I agree” response. It is never happening again is what he vowed and he kept that promise.

All in all, he loves you. He loves your appearence, the way you hold yourself, your intellence, your music, everything. How could he not? There’s no question that no matter what you tell him, he’ll listen with heart eyes and remember it 10 years later, he loves you all the much.

"Did you really tell him this? All of this?" He ignored the previous remark and spun his chair to face the slightly hazy form of a man next to him. "You tell him you're a bottom and B's an...agressive top? 

"He exaggerated some parts, that one was his wording. But yes, I did tell him the whole story," the man answered, eyes glued on the paper — book? message? — still. "He was only thirteen then. I almost can't believe he remembered it so clearly and uses it as the remains of his living."

"I still don't understand why Near sent me this though," Light muttered, keeping his speculating thoughts away from L's ghost ears. "And you're not helping either, L. Pretty sure his ghost would be so stoked to see you more than I do now."

"I wondered what would be their reaction when they found out they died by the same hand, with the same pen, from a paper of the same book," L dismissed that and made his own question again, still crouching on the dining chair Light pulled into the bedroom just for him. It's not like Light can escort him away too, sadly. 

"They? You mean…"

"B and Misora, yes."

"Their mistake," Light answered with a low voice, stood up from his desk and started to get rid of his loosened tie."I hope they didn't gain any information after I read this and haunt me like you do."

"The thing is, Light-kun, if they can, there would be two hundred thousands of translucent beings hanging around this whole apartment building," L said sarcastically, while following the other like a puppy on a leash.

"Stop following me around. You're not my shoulder demon."

"I'm your shoulder angel then?"

If Light knew L's soul did not rot alongside his body instead tormenting each of his moves like this, he wouldn't have killed him. "That Beyond guy looks nothing like you, by the way."

Now that he discovered him again, his picture on the screen of his computer resurfaced from the bottom of his memory. Light remembered Ryuk's cackle when he saw it. He also noticed something similar in both of their eyes. Beyond's eyes caught the camera, his gaze pierced into his soul as if he could see something a human incapable of.

Now he understood why.

"He wore makeup, straightened his hair and manipulated his facial expressions. The mugshot won't show you all that."

"If you asked me if he's cool, I would've answered the same thing as Misora."

"All that to beat me."

"After seeing your face? No wonder, yeah. I knew that feeling. Long, long ago…" Light sighed, in the act or out of real weariness, no one's sure. "Good memories and nightmares."

"That's not nice, Light-kun."

"Oh yeah? I bet Beyond Birthday knows how nice you are." Light laid on the bed and L followed. He spoke monotonously. "Talk about being tossed into the very corner of an enormous brain after pulling each end of the earth just to gain your attention."

"He wasn't worth my time," L turned to face him.

"Not fair. I didn't even try and suddenly you're obsessed with the case to a point where you chained yourself to me and," Light shook his head with a fake, slight frown. "And then you fucking die, in my arms! When will justice be served for Mr. Birthday?"

"Light-kun is an asshole."

"What can I do? I'm not even worth the dirt beneath your shoes."

"If only Mello knew the circumstances you're under when you read it. I'm sure he'd be upset. But I do think the message served their purpose," L smiled mockingly.

"Whatever. Now go, tomorrow is my big day. I have to sleep," both of them checked the digital clock : 1.28.10 / 01:33 . "Seriously L, I don't want to sleep with you. Go talk to Ryuk or something."

With that the ghost left through the walls. Only to reappear as he promised between rusted steel and blood red stairway. The book, the sacred dying message which Near gave to him for the written wish — whether it was more of a spiteful remark or a literal purpose, he complied — of his passing friend left untouched before Misa Amane, twenty days later decided to dispose of it. To rot with every soul, every name ever written inside it.

☕( idk, maybe an) unpopular opinion. Near is a tragic character and his story is a contradiction of how his ego isn't like that of Light, L and Mello, which helps him "win" over them (pls don't take the word literally), but it's also the main cause of his struggles on the person he should be post-Kira.

In the previous ask I saw you said abt how O&O opinions on Near are depressing, is that the "Near is distant to people because he is sensitive" ? I actually relate to him a lot on that aspect and it allows me to think of him in a different way. I tend to treat his rational ability (along side the genius quirks) is a gifted curse that narrowed his choice down to being a detective. His nature (intelligence and fond of solving puzzle) and ideology (his speech in the warehouse) allow him to deliberately work on the Kira case and actually enjoy it to some extend. Detective was fun until it's not, it makes him choose between his ego and L's ego. When he states himself as L, it's the most tragic end for his character arc (tragic but not bad) and his personal motivation (fueled by his ego) slowly dies out. At A-Kira case point, his personal interest (in A-Kira) can't even get him into action. His way of reaching out to people who aren't his coworkers (that is necessary to form to bond with to get the job done) is just that overwhelmingly passive and desperate. I love Mello and Near dynamic to death but ship aside, I can't even make sense of how Near comes to like Mello as a person. I mean, what is it in him that Near find appealing? This make me feel like he treasures Mello that much bc Mello is the only person that value and see him as an invidual, as Near, rather than a detective, a L's successor.

Although I understand that DN is a detective story so it's hard to touch upon the mentality aspect of a character that is depicted as calm and stable, I'm still sad that most (if not every) adaptations hardly ever focus on him and when they do, it's all about his rational ability and his status as L's succesor (some even failed at this). Drama!Near is cute but I can't really grow on him (not to mention Drama!Mello is a mal-personaltity of Near that need to be supressed, gosh that messed me up). And I haven't watch other live-action movies yet bc there's no appeal in Near's charaters in those adaptations. He is reduced to a smart boy, more like a representation of all successors than himself. Also it's kinda disappointing to me that DN adaptations chose to focus on the first half but Light and L in these adaptations are never as good as the manga.

Sorry for this long and kinda depressing ask just wanna share some of my thoughts here, thank you for reading it all.

I strongly agree with you about Near, and I think it's a shame his personality and deeper layers don't really come through in the adaptations outside the manga for me either. The bit that I found depressing in the HTR13 was that O&O both didn't seem to really like Near or to see him the same way that I saw him when I read the manga. He was one of my favourites overall, so it was a bit disappointing to me that they didn't seem to love him as much as I did.

I think Near's positive attachment to Mello is really curious and interesting and sad for him as well, and I love your interpretation of it and why he might feel affectionate toward him no matter what. I got the sense he had a lot of hopes tied up in reconciling with him and that he genuinely cared about him. I know not everyone agrees about this, but in my interpretation nearly all the interactions we see them have together seemed to be negative and hostile from Mello's end of things, and yet Near was still his most dedicated supporter at every turn. I can relate to this aspect of Near a little too well, where I sometimes will overthink people's actions or wish so badly to find something well-meaning and considerate behind it that I can trick myself into finding good intentions when there maybe aren't any to be found. I think it's depressing how he seemed to be languishing in the later one-shots as well, and I do think he's trying too hard to force himself into L's specific mold. L probably did well in that role because it was built around his specific personality, but I don't know if it's really working super well for Near. I want to fire him from L's job and make him go work at a board game cafe where he can chill for a bit and maybe meet a few nice friends who aren't just finger puppets or his employees, hahaha...

as a not exactly closeted but not exactly out pansexual, i sometimes forget that not everyone is aware that i'm not solely into men. a close friend of mine who is bisexual is in the same boat. to clarify, i never really "came out", but i don't necessarily hide that i don't have a preference for a romantic partner, and my friend is pretty much like that too.

this leads to many, many interesting moments in our lives.

for example: we were at a marching band rehearsal earlier last week, and were essentially coming up with the stupidest pickup lines we possibly could using the things around us. my friend used a shitty star wars related pickup line that i can't remember right now after he saw someone's star wars phone case, and i said something around the lines of "that would literally absolutely never work on anyone. i'm all for geeky pickup lines, but i probably would just walk away at this one" and he said "alright, bet" and proceeded to walk over to the nearest table that wasn't ours and used the pickup line, jokingly, on one of the mellos (mellophone players. not important to the story, but he's a baritone and i'm an alto sax), who we knew was a huge star wars fan. the mello dude just laughed at it and shook his head and agreed with my statement, and then my friend tried other star wars themed pickup lines on him, creating this whole pickup line battle thing. after observing this for about 5 minutes, another mello girl at the same table, who both me and my friend have been friends with since 7th grade (so it's been a while) goes "well, (friend's name here), how do you feel about the fact that you've just been hitting on a bunch of guys for the last five minutes?" as a joke -- i can see why this could seem offensive, but i def don't think she realized that it could be interpreted that way, and neither my friend nor the other guys at the table were offended by this statement -- and my friend just shrugged in reply. i was super confused, bc i've known he's been bisexual ever since he first realized, but then i remembered that neither of us were out and for some reason, this was the absolute FUNNIEST thing to both of us. like, have people just seen him hit on guys and think that it's,,,,,,,,, p l a t o n i c ? ? ? ? ? ?

(he turned to me when we faced away from that table and went "i really didn't mind" and winked right after, which made me die laughing and really confused our mello friends)

and actually, people thought the same thing about me too, which i think is downright hilarious. we were playing a game of psych that same week, and the question for my first turn was "what would ani's youtube channel be called, if they had one?" or something like that, and my favorite option was what one of my friends put, which was pansaxy (aka a pun on pansexual and saxophone). i died laughing as i picked it to win, and then half the people in the group go "wait i don't get it" and i'm like "oh it's a pansexual joke, cuz i'm pansexual" and one of the flutes goes "WAIT YOU'RE INTO GIRLS???" and genuinely looked so surprised and i was like "yeah???" and he went "i was so convinced you hung out with (diff friend here) bc you liked him" and i'm like "no lmao i was really close friends with him but also had a thing for his twin sister" and it was genuinely funny to me how surprised people were. like i refuse to believe people have known me this well and for this long and just somehow have missed me talking about loving boobs LMAO

Jot-it-down-as-it happens commentary wherein I mention L way too much.

Commentary:

-Aaah, my Wammy children, my heart settles a little.

-Straight off, the contrast of Mello being outside with people and Near preferring to stay indoors alone, poetry, art, majestic.

-Omfg, characters like these are why I have trust issues.

-Oh! Near is standing upright! I don’t know why I’m surprised!

-Man, the post-L DN world would have been unbearable if I didn’t love Near so much.

-Isn’t it ironic that Light dies at around the same age as L, and Near beats him at around the same age as when he got L.

-Honestly, it’s kind of cathartic seeing someone having that genuine, deeply emotional reaction to L’s death like Mello does.

-I’m seeing the pattern that I like in fiction of “If this hadn’t happened, then that wouldn’t happen, and then that other thing wouldn't happen” that makes every single action matter. It’s pretty obvious in the first part, but it carries through to the second. Even with Near starting his own investigation independent of L, if L hadn’t narrowed down the suspects and if Light hadn’t thrown us into the Yotsuba arc and if Higutchi hadn’t been caught, the police officer wouldn’t have had the lead that would tip off Near etc. Everything is connected and Near wouldn’t have won if L hadn’t himself solved the case first.

-Seriously low-key high-key bitter that we haven’t seen a manga accurate live action attempt at Near.

-Near’s face is so done with Light from the moment he calls and he hasn’t even talked to him yet, I love my child.

-The world might burn and my beloved child Near will still go, “This is very interesting…”

-Light is s u f f e r i n g, and I love seeing his caring side.

-Yes, boys, Mello has a missile, as you do.

-Near has intense, determined, sharp eyes, he has hard eyes, discerning eyes, he sees into your soul and doesn’t like it.

-Low-key loving that Light’s fall was partially not at all about him. Like, Mello really went, “I don’t give a shit for this guy, I just want to beat Near and he’s a fair target.”

-I understand L was the world’s greatest detective and commanded police forces, but my God, the US President is calling him, wow.

I know it’s a truth universally acknowledged that we were robbed of a day in the life of L and Light in handcuffs and I agree, it’s one of the greatest crimes in creative content, but I’d also want to see a day in the life of Misa and Ryuk bc I can’t get over the panel of Misa telling him to help her clean up.

-Is there a more compellingly complicated dynamic than L and Light’s, I don’t think so, I don’t think so.

-Sidoh with his little cheat sheet of rules, I can’t.

-Oh, Light thought Matsuda would get the eyes, not Soichiro. Now I feel bad for him. If it was all too many unknown variables for L in the first part, it’s all too many unknown variables for Light now.

-Aw, L was Near and Mello’s idol? I figured it was so for Mello, but it’s sweet to see Near saying so.

-I’m sorry, but this draws an even straighter line between the L arc and the Near/Mello arc. Like, yes, Near wants to catch the mass murderer and Mello wants to beat Near, but on a personal level Kira dared to defeat and off their idol and BITCH IS GOING DOWN. I’ve always contemplated to what extent L acts as the indirect orchestrator of the second arc and whether the successors were even remotely part of his plans, a worst case scenario, whether in the end it’s still L that Light’s fighting against, through Near.

-Say what you want about the Wammy boys, none of them ever forget their please, sorrys and thank yous.

-Look at how out of hand things have gotten for Kira tho. His ideal world is bigger than him now, and difficult or impossible to control. It’s not entirely his anymore.

-Do you ever think of how L partially built up Kira and then Near destroyed him.

-My son is ALONE in New York?!

-”L will not be happy if we do that”?? “It would be an insult to L, who entrusted those who came after him with this case”?? Oh bb. I know past-manga it became canon that Near never even saw L, but it really doesn’t come off like that in the manga.

-It’s like L is threaded through it all. At first I was like, why did the anime end with a vision of L, the manga doesn’t seem to be that, but the more I read, the more it makes sense.

-Hahahaha, “first we must rub their faces in evidence and make them taste the misery of their defeat,” oh my God, Near.

-It’s missing L times on both sides I see, eh, Light?

-That’s such a cool panel with Near ~commanding the screens.

Whether you call this luck or chance, it’s still perfectly in theme. It was by chance that Light got the notebook, by chance that he met Naomi, that Rem came to love Misa and did Kira’s bidding etc. It’s been chance all along, sprinkled among the machinations and calculations of perfectly prepared geniuses.

-”You are far below L” - Light, lad, even in your moment of perceived ultimate victory you’re fanboying, what is this.

-Cocky, self-assured Light sure is pretty tho.

-I’d have doubted Gevanni’s skills to copy the death note overnight had I not been convinced that such a feat is possible by Neal Caffrey.

Plus, as per the rules, apparently a person with the Shinigami eyes *can’t* be killed by a death note.

-It is with a heavy heart that I conclude this manga, but I do like that it ended on a positive note for Near and the Task Force - cooperating again, Near surrounded by more toys than ever and still with the SPK.

Band Camp Day 4

I'm sore in muscles that I didn't even know I had. Which is saying something since I took a 300-level anatomy class last semester

Forgive me, I know how late this is, but band camp got hectic really fast, and then classes started, and I'm trying to do these now while I remember

today's senior prank: plastic wrapping the tower. It went very well

when rehearsal started, our band director immediately said that he was taking the two drill instructor librarians to make pregame drill copies, so that's where I went

we learned how to copy drill, and apparently we missed the snake, which was a huge thing last year (bc piccs started and dominated it)

and we missed step-2 drill, which I'm completely okay with

tho when the drill instructors demonstrated it, apparently my SL had to go up in my place so that it'd be an even amount of people, which I'm actually okay with bc that makes sense, and it's not ML2

i mean what

anyway, back in the copy room, my accomplice and I were counting how many drill charts each section needed, then labelling the sections with sticky notes. I drew a bear on each sticky note

I drew a lot of bears yesterday, and none of them stuck for more than two hours. it's been a really hot and sweaty week

oh also our band director mentioned that he's leaving for a funeral tomorrow night?

anyway, about an hour and a half later (10am), we returned to the field and handed out drill

the drill instructors were then called to go get numbers (basically we each get a number, and the drill instructors are told which numbers are for which section)

and I guess everyone was talking about the bears? bc my DI got up there and was like "wait, you guys are getting bears?" and then showed the piccolo sticky note, which reads "diccalos" with a drawing of a penis

that penis is poorly drawn and captioned "this is clearly a pair of scissors"

the mello DI took a picture he thought it was so funny, which has been fueling my serotonin levels

and!! people kept mentioning that they liked the bears! I was very excited about it

we learned the first half of pregame. I got the same spot as last year, surprisingly. And I'm next to more piccs, which is also really cool

the drumline's been facing a lot of issues with not knowing what number of people should go on which instrument bc things keep getting switched around by various people

this caused a lot of confusion on the field when there were 6 snares but only 5 charted snare parts

and our band director was NOT happy about it. He kept saying useless stuff like "it seems like you found a place, just use that" and other things like that

one of my good friends is on drumline and she cried. Apparently her drill instructor was really close to crying too

lunch time/passport to campus (a thing that helps people check in and does not apply to me since I live off campus and am a senior)

although we did get lunch from 12-3 because of that. I had time to shower, which was so nice

I currently am drenched in sweat as I type this, tho, so it does sorta feel like it was for nothing

the clarinets started sitting with us, and our freshman is talking to their freshmen, which is really good bc she needs friends who aren't just seniors. I'm very excited

okay but also during lunch we heard some CRAZY tea like. There's this sophomore clarinet player who wanted to get with this sophomore drumline dude and they were this close but APPARENTLY she has chlamydia like wtf and then he blocked her on all social media they had each other on?? and then she kept trying to add him on everything?

AND the drumline is recruiting, so she's like "imma switch to drumline" so yikes @ the drumline good luck

we had outdoor playing rehearsal since we can't be in the band room and ig the previous room we were using is now being occupied by people returning to campus or smthn idk

also the music librarians asked one of the old librarians for help with something EVEN THOUGH us drill librarians knew how to do it so um

we started playing songs that we're gonna do in our first halftime show, and the key signature on the first one is funky, so he had us play that scale, and the piccs sounded so bad that he relocated us so that we could spend time tuning

well the problem was that one of us was playing the wrong scale so yes i'm sure we sounded out of tune

but then we had to tune everyone, then we did it note by note, and then half an hour later we rejoined the band

our band director was like "some of them are smiling, some... aren't" that was awkward

there's also this random man who's standing with our band director, but the kick is that I know who this random man is

my friend from drumline said that her old band director was coming to be our sub while our band director was away for the funeral

sure enough, we got the intro. he's our sub, he's taught 7 people in the band, etc, etc, alumni of my uni, played sousa, etc etc

then we had dinner, which was the last free meal we got for band camp. The pickings were slim, but it was all fine. the other drill librarian didn't sit with the piccs and that was mmmmmm bc I get that she's trying to be an Older Sister to one of the fish clarinets but pls sit with your section

Then we were back outside for more marching rehearsal, where we learned the rest of pregame, marching AND playing. Which like. Yeah, that's pretty on track for a normal band camp? Usually it's good by Thursday and today is Wednesday, so not bad!

I'm mostly worried because two years ago, we didn't do a lot of pregame during band camp and he got angry during the season when we didn't know it very well like

the after band camp stuff was trivia night, which didn't have a huge turn out, but it was fun. I learned that I HATE one of the clarinet freshmen.

26. What are your favorite shipping scenes?

UHHH. I'm taking this as like specific scenes in fic and stuff, but correct me if you mean otherwise. Like when there's pining (or mutual pining) and the characters fight and then in the middle of a heated argument one says something that gets the other to pause. Bonus points if the one who said it slaps their hand over their mouth. I like it when there's a moment that seems shippy and then the author/creator turns it on their head lmao. OH i like it when the characters finally come together for the first time/fight for the first time and its like!!! How is THIS going to play out???! Or the first time the characters see each other differently and its like an /oh/ moment. Or if they've had feelings for ages and didn't realise what it mean and then it all hits them at once at the most inopportune time. I like when characters who insist they don't care about each other, when it comes down to it, do something that risks even their own lives that clearly proves otherwise. I like general pin-drop moments haha, that turns everything on its head. First kisses are always great! 10/10, I actually like kisses a LOT in general in fic, when used sparingly so that each time it happpens I'm like YESSSSSSS. On a slightly darker note (bc i know y'all only come here to hear me gush about my problematique shit), I love when one character is a being pushed to their limit by another and they're like they can't take anymore and the other is like "yes you can". Ajdbaksj, just in general one character being unable to do anything against another one/being helpless is just like mMm. I love it in unhealthy/toxic ships (fictional, of course!) when the abuser/controlling one does something that reminds the other why they stay with them (if they intentionally do), like kissing them, or being kind or saying "I love you". Stuff like that that makes the person weak for them. OH I also like it when one character grabs another by the chin to tilt their head up to make eye contact. Stuff like that akdnaksja. General acts of possessiveness and jealousy too. Stuff like pulling the other one close to them around others or making a point that the other belongs to them or saying stuff like "you're mine". That shit is great, gets me like 0///0

18. What is your favorite unpopular ship?

OH darn that's a good one! Hmmm. I'd say Steve x Loki (Frostshield) from the MCU. I don't know if its THAT unpopular but it's definitely dwarfed by other Loki ships haha. I love the dynamic between them, and I love fics that show Loki being simultaneously put off and endeared by the whole "sickly sweet" thing Cap has. If by "unpopular" you mean "generally disliked"... um, well, confession time, I have read a few Hisogon fics and I kinda that that ship ajdhskdj <<" (they have an interesting dynamic don't hurt me-). OH there's also Jonadio from JJBA which I adore, but is it /that/ unpopular? I've seen a lot of antis for it but it seems popular on ao3 so I won't count it.

Haha, it's definitely Rickorty (since RaM is my current obsession lol).

6. Do you have a certain kind of ship you’re more attracted to?

Oh DEF enemies/rivals to lovers of any kind. Esp if they have some kind of common ground or would make a kickass team if they just worked together! I'm also just realising this, but I tend to have a big weakness for very visually distinct ships, often with a light/dark contrast (which goes for their personalities too haha). I think the thing that attracts me the most to a ship is if there's a sense of "it's only you" kind of thing. Like, this is a person who's special in a way no one else is. Romantically, yes, but also in terms of combat, ideology, understanding them- a kind of mutual obsession. It's why I like stuff like Jonadio and Bakudeku and Meronia (mello x near from death note). There's this sense of obsession that's easy to translate into romance. I guess there's also a lot of History^TM with these ships, and I like that too haha. I guess that's why rival/enemy ships are so appealing, because if I can't think of one character without the other, I'll probably ship them.

I guess that's why I don't generally find appealing friends-to-lovers for that reason (don't wanna call it "boring" but it's just less... enthralling to me-?), like where is the DRAMA! (Of course there's exceptions but that's the general pattern ;) )
